Aare Gorge - Dramatic Natural Wonder near Meiringen
Situated in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland near the town of Meiringen is the narrow yet dramatic natural wonder known as Aare Gorge. Formed as the Aare River cut through granite rock over 15,000 years, the gorge plunges 1,300 feet with sheer cliffs towering on either side.
The turbulent turquoise waters churning through the valley can be viewed from trails along the rim and bridges spanning overhead. Hikers also use the gorge as a passage between Meiringen and Innertkirchen. While it can be visited year-round, spring snowmelt swells the river most intensely.
Just an hour from Interlaken, the powerful landscape of Aare Gorge can be reached by local buses or car. The raw spectacle of the sheer rock walls and surging waters never fails to impress visitors to this natural site in the heart of the Bernese Alps.
