Giessbach Falls - Dramatic Cascade in the Bernese Alps
Plunging down the mountainside near Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, the cascading tiers of Giessbach Falls make for an impressive natural spectacle. The falls consist of 14 separate streams cascading down the rocky cliff face into the valley below.
First documented in the 15th century, the falls were a popular subject for Romantic-era painters and poets. Tourists can ascend via Europe's oldest funicular railway to grand 19th century hotels overlooking the falls. Hiking trails connect to Alpine villages with dramatic views.
The falls can be easily reached by boat across Lake Brienz followed by the funicular. Peak tourist season coincides with summer, though the falls dazzle year-round.
With the mighty torrent dramatically descending the mountain in multiple sparkling tiers, it's easy to see why Giessbach Falls has inspired awe and admiration amongst locals and travelers for centuries.
