In Italy's northern Lazio region, the medieval village of Calcata clings dramatically to the edge of a steep volcanic tufa cliff. First settled by the Falisci people in the 8th century BC, Calcata later came under control of the papacy and was fortified in the Middle Ages.

Most visit Calcata as a scenic daytrip from Rome, less than an hour north. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather, while summers tend to be hot. The remote feeling belies Calcata's proximity to modern infrastructure.
