Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça - Elvas' Hilltop Stronghold
Looming dramatically above the Spanish border near Portugal's Alentejan city of Elvas is the 17th century hilltop fortress of Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça. Ordered built by Portugal's King John IV after the country regained independence from Spain, it formed part of defensive ramparts protecting Elvas.
Designed by French architect Nicolas de Langres, the imposing hexagonal fort is encircled by sturdy granite walls and dominated by a tall keep for observation. The fort's highest point atop the keep rewards visitors with panoramic views over Elvas and Spain's plains beyond the frontier.
The Alentejo's hot dry summers and mild rainy winters make spring and fall ideal times to visit. The fortress lies just outside Elvas, accessible via short uphill hike or car.
Both an engineering marvel and scenic viewpoint, Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça stands as a testament to Portugal's determination to defend its borders through military ingenuity and strategic location.
