Kotor - Walled Medieval Town on Montenegro's Adriatic Coast
Nestled at the end of Montenegro's dramatic Bay of Kotor is the port town of Kotor. Surrounded by imposing limestone mountains, Kotor's well-preserved medieval old town emerged as an important Adriatic seaport during Venetian rule in the Middle Ages.
Strolling through the sea of stone buildings and terracotta roofs surrounded by Kotor's imposing walls that climb the mountainside is like stepping back in time. Highlights include the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and its intricate 12th century frescoes.
Kotor enjoys a Mediterranean climate with very hot, dry summers and rainy winters. July and August bring optimal weather for exploring Kotor's sights or relaxing seaside. It's easily reached by the Adriatic Highway or sailboats cruising the coast.
Whether admiring the views of the bay from St. John's Fortress or winding through historic plazas and squares, Kotor immerses visitors in the rich history and natural splendor that makes Montenegro's coast so spectacular. The dramatic mountain backdrop against the bright blue Adriatic completes the picturesque scene.
