Larung Gar - Tibetan Monastery Town on the Roof of the World
Perched 12,500 feet up on the Tibetan Plateau in China's Sichuan Province, Larung Gar stands astonishingly as the world's largest Tibetan Buddhist academic community. Over 10,000 homes and meditation huts painted white crowd together, housing monks and nuns studying ancient Buddhist wisdom.
Founded in 1980 by Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, Larung Gar expanded rapidly as a center for non-sectarian learning open to practitioners from all over the Himalayas seeking to immerse themselves in contemplative study. The remote setting and frigid climate heighten the sense of meditative isolation.
Larung Gar experiences long, freezing winters and short cool summers. Access is highly restricted but limited tourism helps support residents. Located near Serthar town, reaching Larung Gar requires an arduous overland journey.
Inhabited solely by devoted students renouncing worldly life, Larung Gar is an extraordinary Himalayan monastic settlement like none other.
