Montserrat Monastery - Dramatic Catalonian Mountainside Sanctuary
Catalonia's Montserrat Monastery is a centuries-old Benedictine sanctuary dramatically situated on a mountain ridge towering 4,000 feet over the Llobregat valley. Steep cliffs and strangely shaped rock pillars surround the monastery, whose name means "serrated mountain" in Catalan for its unique natural landscape.
Founded in 1025 AD, Montserrat's remote setting made it an ideal retreat for hermit monks. By the 12th century it hosted a pilgrimage site for Spain's famous Black Madonna statue. The basilica, with its ornate sculpture and gold accents contrasting the stark cliffs, continues to draw visitors today. The monastery's mountainous locale also makes it a popular hiking spot with breathtaking valley views.
Mild winters and hot summers bring comfortable weather for exploring the outdoor trails and monastery complex year-round. Due to the difficult terrain, access is limited to a mountain railway and cable car. Montserrat is about an hour north of Barcelona, making it an easy and rewarding day trip.
With its timeless architecture amongst an otherworldly natural sanctuary, Montserrat Monastery has awed and inspired spiritual pilgrims and nature lovers for nearly a millennium. Its awe-inspiring location make it one Catalonia's most revered sites.
