Perast - Historic Bay of Kotor Town
Along Montenegro's dramatically beautiful Bay of Kotor lies the town of Perast, situated between the bay and imposing Mount Lovćen. During the Venetian Republic era, Perast prospered as a maritime center noted for excelling in boat building and seafaring skills. Wealthy sea captains built ornate Baroque palaces along the waterfront, many still standing today.
Perast's rich architectural heritage reflects its long, affluent history. Meandering the streets lined with elegant stone buildings, and visiting landmarks like St. Nicholas Church and Bujović Palace, it's easy to envision Perast's 17th and 18th century heyday. The two small islands just offshore, Gospa od Škrpjela and Sveti Đorđe, can be reached by boats departing from Perast's docks.
Perast enjoys hot, dry summers and rainy winters ideally suited for sightseeing in spring and fall months. It is positioned midway between Kotor and Risan along the bay, reached by local buses or water taxis.
This protected seaside enclave transports visitors back through Montenegro's tumultuous past, where traces of Venetian grandeur still inspire awe amongst natural splendor.
