Preikestolen - Norway's Breathtaking Pulpit Rock Overlook
Dramatically situated 1982 feet above Lysefjord sits Norway’s iconic Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock. This flat mountain ledge hangs precipitously over the fjord, offering dizzying views that draw hikers and photographers from around the world.
The hike to Preikestolen typically takes 4-5 hours roundtrip and involves steep sections, making it moderately challenging. The trailhead outside Tau starts in a valley and climbs through forested slopes before emerging onto the breathtaking cliffs. The reward is an unforgettable panorama over Lysefjord and the mountains beyond.
Due to Norway's far northern latitude, July through September provide the best hiking weather. Preikestolen can be reached via ferry from Stavanger to Tau, followed by a 19 mile bus ride to the trailhead. Limited overnight guesthouses exist in the area.
While Preikestolen has become an iconic Norwegian landmark, the instantly recognizable sight of its sheer cliff and flat expanse extending over crystalline waters below never fails to amaze visitors. The hike and jaw-dropping views make it a can't-miss for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Norway.
